Advocacy
The Arc of Rappahannock, in conjunction with the other chapters and The Arc of Virginia, advocates on the state level for services. There are over 4,000 people in Virginia awaiting community services, in the form of Medicaid Waivers, and only several hundred Waivers available each year. The Arc has advocated very long and hard for the waivers that we have and will continue to do so.
Assistive Technology
The Assistive Technology Program provides equipment, on loan for three months, to children and adults in need of communication, coordination and cognitive skills. The assistive technology instructor will assess the need, furnish the equipment and train the parent or child in its use. Equipment will change as progress is made in these areas and loan time may be extended as necessary.
Best Buddies
Best Buddies is an international program founded by the Kennedy family that matches college and university students with people, age 18 and above, who have intellectual/developmental disabilities. The purpose is to form ongoing friendships between these two groups. The Arc of Rappahannock sponsors this program in conjunction with the University of Mary Washington. Buddies are matched at the beginning of the school year and they are required to have weekly contact with each other throughout the year.
Cooking and Nutrition Program
This program was developed for adults who live either independently, in supervised apartments or in homes where cooking and nutrition experience is necessary. The nutrition part of the program is taught by The Virginia Extension Service in a group setting and the cooking training is one to one in the Arc kitchen. The trainers for this program are volunteers, who are giving their time to use special cookbooks and teach another person how to cook healthy meals for themselves.
Daybreak
Daybreak is a Saturday afternoon respite/recreation program that gives parents a break from 2-5 PM while their children play, make craft items and have a snack with their friends. This program is staffed by students from the University of Mary Washington and tries to maintain a one to one ratio of students to children. The Coordinator of the program is generally a graduate student or a psychology intern and they serve for one semester. Weekly supervision is provided by the Executive Director of the Arc. This program is for ages 2 and up.
Dental Resources
The Dental Resources Program provides adults, age 20 and older, with free dental exams, cleaning and x-rays using the facilities of The Moss Free Clinic. The monthly clinics are staffed by volunteer dentists, hygienists and dental hygiene students from Germanna Community College. If need for restoration is found, the patient is sent to a local dentist’s office for treatment and The Arc pays the bill. This program is open to people with intellectual /developmental disabilities who cannot afford to pay or who are under insured.
Facilitation of CD Services
CD services are consumer directed services and they are available to people who have an MR or DD waiver and are paid by Medicaid. Our Facilitator is available to people who have a waiver and have been referred to us by their case manager. The facilitator will explain the program, the paper work and assist people in hiring in-home providers for respite, personal care or companion services within the home. This service is only available to people who have a waiver. The facilitator may be contacted at 540-899- 3789 ext. 3.
Information and Referral
Information about The Arc of Rappahannock and its programs is provided in the quarterly newsletter, by telephone, email and on the website. If information is not available from us about a particular issue, we will refer you to the proper source. General information about services or where to look is also available by dialing 211 in this community. The latter is a service of Rappahannock United Way.
Santa’s Helpers
Santa’s Helpers is a holiday gift giving program that provides families who have children with intellectual/developmental disabilities and cannot afford gifts with a happy holiday. This program also provides gifts for adults without families gifts for the holidays. You can sign up for this through your case manager or your school.
